Infertility

Infertility is one of the most burning health issues nowadays in the world. In India, the infertility rate has been increasing by 20-30% year on year. Infertility becomes a matter of concern because not only physical but psychological and social angles are also attached with infertility.

For pregnancy to occur, the complex reproductive system process should take place in perfect order:

  • Release of a mature ovum and collection of that ovum into the fallopian tube
  • Male and female sexual Intercourse at the right time where the potent and motile sperm swims through the uterine cavity, reaches to the fallopian tube and gets fertilised
  • The fertilized egg travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus as well as implants and grows in the uterus.

Any disturbance in this process may become the causative factor of infertility. The causes of infertility may lie in male or female or both. Here we will discuss primarily about female infertility.

Causes of female infertility

There are many causes which can prevent you from being pregnant.

Infertility

PCOD:

It is a syndrome which occurs due to imbalance in the activities of hypothalamus, pituitary gland and ovaries, resulting in a hormone imbalance, which affects ovulation. There are many other side effects of PCOD such as growth of facial hair, acne etc.

Hormonal Disturbance:

There are many hormones responsible in the journey of pregnancy. Such as FSH, LH, PROLACTIN etc. Any imbalance in these hormones may result into infertility

Damage to Fallopian Tubes:

Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes prevent the sperm-ovum fertilization which results in to infertility.

Uterine & Cervical problems:

Problems related to uterus such as fibroids, polyps, and endometriosis scaring as well as uterine abnormalities pertaining to size and shape of uterus may hinder the fertility. Problems related to cervix such as stenosis or narrowing of the passage may also obstruct the fertility process

Unexplained Infertility:

Around 20-25% of the couples fall in this range where everything is normal but due to some unexplained reasons they remain infertile.

  • Fertility drugs: this includes hormonal treatment. It acts on the ovulation cycle.
  • IUI (Intra uterine Insemination): It involves depositing a concentrated amount of sperm from directly into the uterus, using a catheter that passes through the cervix.
  • IVF (In Vitro Fertilization): In IVF, eggs are collected from the ovaries and then combined in a laboratory with sperm. If fertilization is successful, the resulting embryo or embryos are transferred back into the uterus.
  • ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection): ICSI is an add-on procedure to an IVF treatment to overcome male fertility problems and to help the fertilization. A single sperm is injected into a single egg and the resulting embryo is transferred to your uterus.
  • GIFT (Gamete intrafallopian transfer): This process is rarely in use nowadays. Here, eggs are mixed with sperm in a lab. Then, by laparoscopic surgery, they are injected into the fallopian tubes so fertilization can occur naturally inside the body.
  • ZIFT (Zygote intrafallopian transfer): This process is also rarely used. ZIFT is similar to GIFT. Unlike GIFT, here the physicians make sure that the fertilized sperm-ovum becomes the zygote. This zygote is then injected through laparoscopy.
  • Surgery:To remove the obstacles like blockage, fibroids, polyps etc.

Apart from this, there are processes like donor eggs and surrogacy. Both of these processes can’t be called as a cure to infertility as these processes are the alternatives obtained due to failure of all the said treatments and therapies.

Practically, there are only two options available in modern medicine as far as the fertility treatment is concerned. IUI and IVF. Hormonal treatment is an integral part in both of these treatments. The success ratio of IUI is around 20-25% (approx) and of IVF is around 30-35% (approx). Moreover, the procedure like IVF is very costly. Entire process is very painful to the patient. Because of these factors, the trend is changing. Couples prefer Ayurveda as it is a natural treatment for infertility in female.
